Dear Girls,
One year has really gone by so fast. Tomorrow is the last day of your current academic year. It is the last day of you as first graders at Otsuma Ranzan High School. How did this one year go for you? Did you grow as a person? Did you discover something new about yourself?
I always used to wonder about what I want to be when I grow up. Not knowing is very hard. But being the best and doing your best right now is also a very good thing. Every time I feel down I look at this card my friend made for me.
It reminds me to live each every day to the best of my ability. What kind of person do you want to be today? Think about that and do your best.

01Otsuma Ranzan’s Graduation
02My old school’s graduation

The wind is getting warmer. Flowers have started blooming on trees. The season is changing. It is the time for change in many ways.
This is how many speeches have started in the graduation ceremonies I have seen so far. The Japanese make many speeches on graduation day and all speeches start in the same way. I wonder why everyone talks about the season at the beginning of speech? It is very poetic and beautiful, but after hearing many speeches in the same day, I wonder why people don’t make some changes? But then again, this is Japan after all!
The first time I went to a graduation ceremony, I was surprised by a few things. I was surprised by how serious the ceremony was. Outside Japan, graduation is a time for celebration and happiness. In Japan, people were such dark colored suits the graduation and they are so quiet!
Another thing that surprised me was how much respect is given to the Japanese flag. People bow to it many times. Still, I think it is wonderful that students who make speeches give thanks to their parents and teachers.

Today I read an article about how much Japan has changed in a very limited time. I am sure you all know about this but I still found it surprising. The article had a video made in 1897 near Nihonbashi in Tokyo.

This is Nihonbashi today near the location where the video was made.

Dear Girls,
Today I read a story in the news that was very shocking! According to the news article, the Japanese Prime Minister recommended the US President Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize! I thought it was a joke but Donald Trump himself said that Shinzo Abe had recommended him.
Think about it. Donald Trump is a candidate to get the Nobel Peace Prize. He is as peaceful as a firing gun!

You don’t know who the Beatles are?!?!
Dear Girls,
This week, the theme of your QQE lesson was music. Since I love music, I was excited about this lesson. BUT! When I played the song “I want to hold your hand” by the Beatles, none of you knew about the artist! I was so shocked!!

Where can I even begin!? The Beatles changed music forever. All musicians the world over know them and their songs. They inspired a new kind of music and sound.
The Beatles changed rock and made rock become more popular among people. Have you heard about Beatlemania? If you watch any live videos of the Beatles, you can clearly see it. Women screaming, people fainting just because they were so excited to see them!
The most well-known Beatles songs in Japan are “Let it be” and “Hey Jude”.

Some of my favorite songs are “Day Tripper”, “ Here comes the sun”, “Blackbird”, “Penny Lane”, “All you need is love”… I could go on and on!!

Listen to their music!! It’s important to know it!

This is year this song’s 40th anniversary.
I think if you hear this song you can’t tell it is very old, but if you see the video you can see very 1970’s disco and funk fashion.

Hey All!
How were your tests? I hope you all did your very best in them.
Sometimes I wish I could go back to high school so that I could redo all my tests! You see, I never gave a 100 percent when I was in school. I was so afraid of failing, of making mistakes that I never really tried my best. It is so silly and such a bad idea to do so, isn’t it? Because if you never try hard, you never know how good you are and can be. If you are afraid of failing, you will also never be the best at anything. Becoming good at something means making many mistakes, failure AND then learning from them. The more mistakes you make, the more you learn.
I know that now. I wish someone would have told me when I was younger!

Japan’s soft power

Hi!
Do you know what “soft power” is? Soft power is the ability to change things without using real power (not using guns, pressure and so on).
Japan has a lot of soft power. It can influence things without using force! A big example of this is the FIFA world cup. Many people were leaving trash in the stadiums after games. After seeing Japanese fans cleaning up after a match, many other fans also started cleaning up. This is soft power! No wonder many people have called Japan the best fans!
Did anyone see the viral video from the Japan and Senegal match? This video also shows soft power! In this video a Senegal football fan is singing a song with Japanese fans from a Japanese Anime called One Piece. Anime and Manga has given Japan a lot of soft power! See the video! It made me smile!

Mei’s Rant *(rant: to talk a lot about something in an excited or angry way)
*Selfish: adj. 形容詞caring only about yourself and not other people わがままな, 自分勝手な
01
02
Today’s post is not going to be a “musing”. It will be a rant. I saw this article in the news today. It made me so angry!
Why did it make me angry? When people have children, the woman has to make many sacrifices. In Japan, the woman has to take care of the baby, with little or no support from their partners. They have to do housework. They have to stop working and sacrifice their careers. Yet, many politicians (mostly male politicians) think it is okay to say things like “it is selfish not having children”. Why can a man or anyone criticize what a woman chooses to do to her own body? The decision to have children is for couples and not any politician!
Girls, if you can, change the world around you! We need more open minded and strong women leaders! If we don’t, Japan’s gender gap will never end.

What music did you listen when you were younger?
I grew up in a country where we only had two television channels. They played no music. We also had only one radio station. It was very boring and was controlled by the government.
So how did I listen to music? My uncles in Japan used to send my father CD’s of his favorite music. So I listened to a lot of classical music and “oldies”. Oldies are songs that were popular before. In my case, I listened to pop music from the 1950’s! So I used to listen to artists like Connie Francis, Perry Como, Paul Anka… I can go on and on, but I am sure most of you don’t know these artists!
If anyone is interested in listening to such music, let me know! I shall recommend some songs!

What a rainy two days we have had! When I was a child I used to love rain! In my country, where I live, we don’t get a lot of rain. So every time it rains, people get happy! We cook special food and we usually go in the rain with no umbrella! Sadly, rain causes many problems too. We have no electricity and the roads become full of water after it rains. Sometimes, I had no school because of the rain.

Today I read an article in a science journal which shocked me. The article was about the gender gap (the difference between man and women) in scientific fields. In the article it said that it may take more than 100 years for as many women as men to work in some science fields! For example, in computer science, to have the same numbers of men and women in an office, will take more than 280 years. This is ridiculous!
Girls you all can help change this trend! Don’t let your future be decided because of your gender!

Hello students!
“If she could fly, she wants to go swimming in space.” This is one of the things one of my students said about her classmate when she was introducing her. Isn’t that a great and memorable way to introduce someone?
What would you want to do if you could fly? I think I would want to meet my family and friends more!

Hello Students!
Did you hear the news about Yuki Kawauchi? He won the Boston Marathon this week. I read about this in the Guardian Newspaper. In the article, it talked about how unique and cool Mr. Kawauchi is. It also said that he works for the Saitama Government and has a normal job. He trains after working.
I wish I had that much energy!

Hello students!
Do you remember the principal’s talking about “Serendipity?” This was the headline in a British Newspaper:

Scientists accidentally create enzyme (酵素) that eats plastic bottles

This is serendipity! This enzyme was discovered in Japan by chance. This discovery is very exciting for scientists because it can help with the world’s waste problem. However, many scientists say that we need to make less plastic materials in the first place. Right now, we just produce too much to have a pollution free earth.

Hello students!
I read the newspaper everyday (many, many times a day). Today I read the news that a pair of mangoes in Miyazaki are going to be sold for ¥400,000! To me, this is crazy! There are so many things you can do with ¥400,000. In Haiti, which is one of the poorest countries, you can sponsor 8 children for one year. In India, you can feed 20000 people with this much money.
One of the SDGs is zero hunger. So it is something we need to think about.
What would you do with 400,000 yen?

Hello students!
I hope that you all are getting comfortable now in your classes.
Yesterday was the welcome event. I really enjoyed it! I wish I was a student so I could enjoy doing club activities. Was there any club you got interested in yesterday?
The presentations were so creative and fun! They were all so unique to the club too! The tea ceremony club looked so elegant! I also had a great time watching the kendo club’s presentation. Their presentation did not go perfectly but it was so much fun to see! Actually, it was great to see all the presentations! I don’t get a chance to see you all outside class, so it was a good chance for me to get to know you all a little better!

Mei’s Musings
Good Afternoon!
The weather is so strange these days! It was so hot a few days ago and now it’s cold. I woke up in the middle of the night to get an extra blanket because I was feeling so cold. The weather also the reason why I made soup for lunch today.
I do that every day. I wake up early in the morning and I cook! I don’t make very beautiful lunches like a lot of you bring from home. Last year, when I saw some of your lunch boxes, I felt so jealous! A typical lunch in another country looks very different from the lunches in Japan.
I will write about how my lunches were when I was a student in another post!

Hello! The first week of the school has started now. I hope you all are getting comfortable in your new environment.
What did you all do this weekend? I went back to Osaka to meet my uncles. In Osaka, I got some sad news. On Saturday, there was a fire near the school I used to teach at before. When I saw the news I got scared and worried. I found out later that the news was about my student. His mother and two younger sisters died in this fire. Thankfully, my student was safe, but I felt so sorry for him. In a few minutes, his life completely changed.
Life is very precious and very uncertain. This tragedy reminded me that we need to be thankful for what we have. We need to treasure what we have.

Good morning!
This is my first post of the year. To our new students; Welcome to Otsuma Ranzan!
To our old students; welcome back!
It is spring time in Japan. This is the time when things start. It is the time when things change. It is the time when things grow.
Today, in the morning, our Principal Ms. Mashimo talked about very important things.
First, she reminded us to “find our good points”. I think this is very important. We need to find our value. Everyone has their unique good points. That’s what makes everyone special. Remember, there is only one of you in the world!
The second thing she talked about was “serendipity”. I like this word a lot. It tells us that many great scientists found useful and wonderful things by making a mistake. Mistakes are not bad! They are good for us.
I hope you remember these two things this year. Let’s have a wonderful year together.
Be kind to yourself and be kind to others.
